If you are lucky enough to have the chance to study abroad, then I highly recommend that you take the opportunity presented to you especially if you’re studying a foreign language. It can be a scary thought living in a completely new environment, but keep in mind that it will be a rewarding experience that only a small percentage of people are able to have in their lifetime.

When studying abroad, you can usually choose to stay for either 6 months or 1 year. I would choose to stay for at least 1 year if your budget allows you to. This is because it will usually take around 3 to 6 months for you to get used to hearing and understanding the new language you’re learning spoken at the normal speed it’s supposed to be spoken in. So you should take the time to let your ears adjust to the new language in order to take advantage of the whole experience.

You should also try to immerse yourself totally into the culture to get the maximum benefit out of your stay. It is easy to want to stick around other foreign students and make friends with people who are also in your shoes, but try to involve yourself in the daily lives of the locals to increase your knowledge of the culture and the language.

One of the things you can do is to stay in student dormitories where local students stay, and not in dormitories that only accommodate other students studying abroad. You will not only learn about the culture and the daily lives of the local students, but you will also be forced to communicate in the language you’re studying. This is a big challenge at first, but the local students are always happy to help you learn their language and you’ll make a lot of local friends that way.

Another thing you can do is to do home stays with local families. This is a great way to learn about the family life of the locals and you will also have the opportunity to eat some traditional local food that you might not be able to get anywhere else. You will also be forced to speak the language you’re studying as the family members don’t usually speak good English. But the best thing about home stays is that you get to be treated as part of a family member, which can lead to a long and lasting relationship in the future.
