Foreign Language Courses
What are the foreign language course requirements for college?
I was wondering if you know the requirements for the first years of college. Do you have to take regular course like math, social studies and science before you declare your major? Or you just have to take your course that your going to be majoring in? I wanted to major in the italian language. Do I just take the required course for that, or do I have to take the general subjects I listed above?
Each school sets its own criteria. My school (Rutgers) did not require foreign language if the student had completed 2 years of foreign language in high school.
Usually you do not declare your major formally until after you complete about 60 credits. Each school is different though.
The courses you listed, math and science etc. fall under what is called General Education. Every college graduate must complete a minimum amount of these courses to be awarded their degree. Regardless of major you must complete your school’s minimum amount of General Education courses. These courses are reviewed by your Academic Dean while the subject matter that you choose to major is is reviewed by that department for certification to graduate.
If you want to major in a foreign language obviously you have to contact that department at your school to find out when you can declare your major and what courses are required for a degree in Italian.
