Frequently Asked Questions

What happens in your language classes?

Our language classes are fully immersive in the target language.  Our native speaking bilingual teachers fill classes with engaging, developmentally appropriate activities ranging from singing songs, playing games to puppetry, arts and more.

What is the curriculum like?

Our curriculum is filled with topics that are important to you and your child in your daily lives. Our sessions are divided into fun thematic units that last approximately a month each.

Do you offer a free trial class?

Yes. We would be happy to arrange a free, no obligation trial class.  Please contact us at (253)861-4971 or send an email to staff@lillinguists.com to get scheduled.

What happens if we start in the middle of a session?

Your child will not be behind if they start mid session.  The children that start mid session transition into class quite easily, especially when they start at the beginning of a new thematic unit.

If you would like to enroll mid session, give us a call or an email and we would be happy to help you find the best date to start.  Tuition is         pro-rated based on the week that you begin.

How often should we attend?

The more interpersonal exposure your child has to the target language the more rapid learning will take place. Most participants enroll in one class per week.  We encourage additional class enrollment for increased exposure and repetition.  We offer a 30% discount on second class enrollment.

Is there any homework?

We do not assign homework. However, we do encourage interaction in the target language during the period between classes. We provide a weekly handout with key phrases to help reinforce class content at home.  We also have a collection of children's books and other items that can be checked out for use at home.

What about learning with CDs, DVDs or other media?

Experts tell us that by far the most effective way to learn a language is through personal interactions with a native speaker.  This is especially true for babies and young children.  Though DVDs and other media can be helpful additions, they are not a substitute for personal interactions.

What are your class sizes?

We limit our language classes to six children. Our smaller class sizes allow us to provide a higher quality language experience and a more personal approach than you will find in larger classes.

Will it be confusing for my child?

The first class or so may feel a little awkward for your child if they have never been exposed to the new language. This is normal.  However, quickly they will become comfortable with hearing the new language and being in the class environment. They will have a great time!

How long will it take for my child to speak the new language?

Young children are very good at comprehending the language spoken to them.  Much better than adolescents or adults.  They have a natural ability to use cues to quickly develop an understanding of what is being introduced to them in the new language.

Young children learning a new language commonly go through a 'silent period'.  During this time they are laying a foundation by becoming comfortable with and absorbing the details of the language including it's unique sounds, rhythm and intonation.  Be assured that there is a great deal of learning taking place before your child begins spontaneously producing the language.

Production of the new language comes later, when the child is developmentally ready.  The time it takes for a particular child to begin speaking the language is dependant on a variety of factors including his or her physical developmental stage, how much exposure they have to the language, their emotional experience with the language and their personality.

It has been well documented that young children have a significant  advantage when it comes to learning a new language.  Infants have a wide open ear to hearing all of the phonetic sounds of any language, young children are able to develop a native syntax and accent.   These advantages during infancy and early childhood fade quickly with age.  Though there is a window of opportunity, it important to know that language learning takes time and practice at any age.
