Child Foreign Language
When teaching your child (if you choose to) a foreign language, do you think it’s more valuable to have them?
learn one that will be highly useful or do you think any second language is a good thing? I’m learning gaelic (well trying) and my youngest seems to be into it but I’m wondering if having him learn a more universal second language would be better. They don’t offer foreign language at our schools until highschool btw…….
Des, we hoosiers don’t have much call for Gaelic either;) I think it’s a beautiful language but as you’ve all said, I want to set him up with a life skill instead of just a language “hobby” of sorts. Thanks everyone!
In my state, it’s not even an option; it’s mandatory starting in grade school which i think is ridiculous.
I’m all for my child learning a foreign language but i don’t think it should be mandatory by any means. I took 5 years of Spanish and what purpose does it serve me now? None.
I want my child to learn & understand English first, then choose another language if he wishes.
ETA: I should add that i think it’s beneficial for a child to learn another language young only when their family speaks that language too. (Such as a hispanic child learning english & spanish).
